I will no longer maintain this blog. This is the last post. It’ll be up until the domain name expires some time next year.
I have been quite fed up with all the bike related crap that’s been going on in NYC and I don’t want to be a part of it any more. I don’t even ride as much as I used to as it has become way too frustrating and dangerous to ride in the city. When I started commuting by bike years ago it was a non-issue, I was just some guy on a bike and nobody cared. Now riding a bike in the city is a political thing. You are a target for everyone now: drivers, pedestrians and cops all hassle you these days. I had zero issues for many years.
This summer alone I was assaulted by drivers twice, several times by pedestrian, harassed by cops at least twice for not riding in a bike lane, and I lost count of close ones with careless pedestrians. And I was rear-ended (harmlessly, but still…) several times by another cyclist when I stopped at a red light. I had a confrontation with a driver who stepped into the bike line from between the cars right in front of a police car. I asked the cops for help, they just told me to move along. They didn’t say anything to the driver who who was still yelling obscenities at me as I was riding away.
A cyclist hits a pedestrian? It’s all over the news and he’s sued and possibly even arrested. A driver jumps the curb and maims bunch of people? An accident. No big deal. Oh, he was actually a victim too… Poor guy. But he still has his fucking legs attached while his victim does not!!! And that man will be still allowed to drive. Jump a curb and maim bunch of kids in front of their school? Oops, wrong pedal. And the idiot principal adds insult o injury by warning kids not to wear headphones while WALKING ON A SIDEWALK. Excuse me, but how fast does one need to drive to jump a curb and drive half way through a city block??? Because that wasn’t 30mph. But NYPD sees no problem with that.
If you want to commit a perfect murder in NYC just hit someone with your car and say “oops, I didn’t see them” or just say that you have pressed the wrong pedal and you will walk way. IMHO, both statements are clear admissions that the driver is is not capable of operating a vehicle and his/her licenses should be revoked for life. But… NYPD and DA don’t care when people are killed and maimed by cars. They’re way too busy giving out tickets for urinating and drinking beer in public to enforce speeding and traffic laws. They don’t have resources, they say. I say otherwise: plenty of cops are available to bust drivers for making a harmless wrong turn but non can be bothered to ticket people for speeding in the same area. For weeks I saw in excess of 10 cops and several police vehicles sitting on E37th Street giving out tickets for illegal turns while people a block away were blowing red lights with every single light change. I stood there and observed. Not to mention large operations busting cyclists en masse, really NYPD? Really?!?
It’s true that vast majority of cyclists don’t obey the traffic laws. I won’t argue that. But why a cyclist riding through a red light is somewhat considered more of a menace than a 5 ton SUV going 50mph down 2nd Ave. Go figure, because I have no fucking idea how that works!!!
So, lots of cyclists are inconsiderate jerks and don’t obey the laws and show no respect which pisses people off and then you have NYPD and media help perpetuate the image of lawless cyclist and encourage people to harass them. People see how NYPD behaves and take that as a hint. I haven’t see this much animosity and outright aggression against cyclists in the past. I’m sick and tired of that.
Are people really that stupid that they have accepted the car carnage as status quo, as something normal, but a cyclist is suddenly a threat?
Add the droves of fucking idiots on City bikes riding the wrong way in bike lanes and I’ve had enough.
End of rant.
